ABOUT IEC(Importer Exporter Code)

IEC (Importer Exporter Code) number is a ten digit code number given to an exporter or importer by the Director General of Foreign Trade(DGFT), Government of India.

A user needs an IEC for enabling foreign remittances and acceptance. IEC is necessary for import and export of goods and services (only in limited circumstances of specified services/technologies).

Permanent Account Number (PAN) is pre-requisite for obtaining an IEC. One and only one IEC can be issued against a single PAN.


Import Export code is issued only to the businesses carrying out international trade and not to individuals.

Required Documents

The basic documents needed are as follows:

  • Pan card of the applicant
  • Address proof of the business
  • 3 Passport Size Photograph
  • Partnership deed/MOA/AOA
  • In case of Company/ Partnership firms – PAN Card and Address proof of ALL Directors/Partners.
  • Nature of Goods to be imported/ exported and the name of the country from which the goods to be imported or exported.
  • In case of Manufacturing Unit, SSI Registration of the Unit.



No export or import shall be made by any person without an IEC number unless specifically exempted.

The following categories of importers or exporters are exempted from obtaining IEC:

  • Ministries/Departments of the Central or State Government and certain notified charitable organizations.
  • Persons importing or exporting goods for personal use not connected with trade or manufacture or agriculture.
  • Persons importing/exporting goods from/to Nepal provided the CIF value of a single consignment does not exceed Indian Rs.25,000
  • Persons importing/exporting goods from/to Myanmar through Indo-Myanmar border areas provided the CIF value of a single consignment does not exceed Indian Rs.25,000
An IEC number allotted to an applicant shall be valid for all its branches / divisions / units / factories. IEC is valid for ever and there is no need for renewals.
Yes, PAN is mandatory. If PAN card is not allotted yet then a copy of PAN allotment letter from I.T. Department will also be accepted.
On the basis of IEC, companies can obtain various benefits on their exports /imports from DGFT, Customs, export Promotion Council etc.
